Celebrate Sweden 500 years
June 6th, 2023
In 2023, Sweden celebrates its 500th anniversary. It has been 500 years since Gustav Vasa was elected as the king of Sweden on June 6th, during the parliamentary assembly in Strängnäs. That was the moment when Sweden became independent and has remained so ever since. That is why we celebrate Sweden’s National Day every year on June 6th.

About the Project
As part of the jubilee, Svenska Kulturpärlor, which consists of fantastic gems around the county of Södermanland, Sweden, is the initiator of the Sweden 500 years project. The project portrays historical events in the history of Sweden, Strängnäs, and Mariefred through 70 artworks. Together, these artworks will create a 140-meter-long artist fence in central Mariefred, adjacent to the Gripsholm Inn with a view of the Gripsholm Castle, Vasaborgen.
The total of 70 images from our history will be selected and illustrated by approximately 7 artists and historians. The general public will have the opportunity to submit suggestions on which events they consider important to depict. This historical artwork, spanning approximately 140 meters, will likely become Sweden’s longest historical depiction. The goal is for the artwork to remain in place for the next 500 years. The project is estimated to cost approximately 4.4 million Swedish kronor.
On June 6th, 2023, the artwork will be unveiled, and an evening gala dinner will be held at Gripsholm Inn to celebrate the 500th anniversary.
